Play That Funky Music -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- a not-so-funny look back

In the late ‘90s Mike was playing with a band in an extended engagement at a local club. As they had been there a while, they noticed a regular who was at the club almost every weekend night.

He was an older guy, about 60, in great shape, and an energetic dancer. He loved to dance. He never brought a date, but would be on the dance floor for every fast number with one of the girls in attendance. He danced with all the girls and, since he was a nice fellow as well as good dancer, they all enjoyed dancing with him.

On a particular weekend night, the guy was there as usual and having a large time. The band launched into an crowd favorite, Play That Funky Music. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Qnoh3h6JD8)

You remember how it goes: "Play that funky music, white boy. Play that funky music ‘til you die . . . ‘til you die.

Well, the older guy was suddenly on the floor. No one paid much attention, presuming that he was doing some wild dance move like the gator. But he wasn’t. And then he died.

For the duration of that engagement, the band deleted the song from their set list.

My dad always requested that song from the Avery-Flynn Duo...
Luckily we never played it for him!!!
