Happy Birthday, Elvis

About 3,000 fans braved freezing weather today to celebrate what would have been Elvis’ 75th birthday on the grounds of Graceland, the White House of rock and roll

Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley and Elvis’ grandchildren were hosts for the event. The three-foot-tall birthday cake was the winner of an online competition beating out three other design submissions. This wasn’t the cake I voted for, but – oh, well.

Most of the cake was tinted blue for blue suede shoes with white glitter to represent diamonds for the 75th anniversary. It also featured the TCB lightning bolt, the rhinestone eagle from the Aloha from Hawaii jumpsuit, and the gates of Graceland. A bit busy, if you ask me.

With temperatures today never higher than 17 degrees and with the wind chill taking us down tonight to four degrees, possibly zero, I think the crowd at Graceland was brave and lucky that the showstopper cake didn’t turn into ice sculpture.

Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building.
